Sony confirms 9 Xperia devices will receive Android 9 Pie

When a brand new major version of Android gets released (like Android 9 Pie) it has people wondering when (and sometimes if) their current smartphone will receive the update. This rarely happens to older smartphones, which is why we appreciate the contributions from the developer community here at XDA for the ports they release. This week some headlines spoke about 6 of Sony's smartphones being guaranteed to receive the update to Android Pie. But as we pointed out, the company had not confirmed which Xperia devices were scheduled to be updated. However, in a new blog post published today, the folks over at Sony Mobile have announced which Sony Xperia devices are currently planned to receive the new version of Android.

Here are the devices that will be receiving the official Android Pie update directly from Sony.

  • Sony Xperia XZ2
  • Sony XZ2 Premium
  • Sony XZ2 Compact
  • Sony Xperia XZ Premium
  • Sony XZ1
  • Sony XZ1 Compact
  • Sony XA2
  • Sony XA2 Ultra
  • Sony XA2 Plus

Sony Mobile says that owners of these devices will not have to wait very long to receive the update to Android's latest version. However, their release schedule is very vague with the earliest update confirmed to start happening in November. The company says the  Xperia XZ2, XZ2 Premium, XZ2 Compact, Xperia XZ Premium, XZ1, and XZ1 Compact will "be among the first" to receive the official update in the form of an OTA update. Then, they have told us that those who currently own the XA2, XA2 Ultra, and XA2 Plus will have to wait a bit longer as they will begin to receive the update to Android 9 Pie sometime in "early 2019."

They also remind us about the roadmap which shows how major updates to Android start with the Platform Development Kit (PDT) from Google and go all the way through multiple phases until the update is certified, approved and then pushed out to the smartphone.

As a reminder though, these are just the plans for Sony's official rollout process for Android Pie. Devices which are not announced today could still receive an update from the company, and they could also receive a port or a custom ROM from the developer community here at XDA. Let's also not forget that Sony even went as far as to publish a guide that shows how to build AOSP Android 9 Pie for a large number of their smartphones.
